Artists throughout the centuries have turned to printmaking as a significant medium of artistic expression, exploring techniques including etching, woodblock printing, engraving, and lithography. Among the most notable artists to embrace these methods were Rembrandt, Goya, and the Impressionists, each demonstrating the expressive possibilities of the printed image.

During the 20th century, as the prices of original artworks increased, printmaking also became a way of multiplying images and making art accessible to a wider audience at more affordable prices. With the emergence of the Pop Art movement, techniques such as silkscreen and offset printing were deliberately adopted from commercial production and transformed into artistic tools.
