Ali Golestaneh’s paintings are rooted in a quiet and attentive observation of everyday life. Throughout his career, he explored landscapes, portraits, the human figure, and familiar scenes from his immediate surroundings, developing a deeply personal visual language marked by intimacy, economy, and a sensitive observation of light, atmosphere, and form.

Nature held a central place in Golestaneh’s practice. During his years in Spain, he produced extensive landscapes, seascapes, and scenes of everyday life using coloured pencil on paper. This distinctive approach—characterized by reduced detail, an emphasis on volume, and an individual interpretation of colour—continued to inform his work after his return to Iran. In his later years, he increasingly worked in gouache and oil, developing a more muted, earthy palette while turning his attention inward.

In his later work, Golestaneh increasingly painted the rooms, objects, views, and quiet details of his own home and immediate environment. Whether depicting a landscape, a human figure, or an ordinary domestic scene, his paintings reflect a sustained commitment to looking closely and finding poetry in the familiar. His fascination with the human figure was similarly grounded in the people around him, whose individuality and presence he approached with directness and sensitivity.

Golestaneh studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, receiving his MFA in 1972. He lived and worked in England and Spain before returning to Tehran, where he continued his practice until his death in 2021. His work has been exhibited extensively in Iran and internationally and is held in significant collections and institutions.
