AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ART

Coinciding with the opening of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, Total Arts at the Courtyard presented an exhibition of works by Australian Aboriginal artists. Acrylic painting by Central Australian Aboriginal artists represents one of the most significant developments in modern Australian art, transforming ancient traditions of storytelling, landscape, and ancestral knowledge into a contemporary visual language.

The paintings are often mythical representations of landscapes and conceptual maps, depicting designs and stories passed down through generations. Within Aboriginal traditions, paintings, dances, and songs connected to the Dreaming serve to recount the stories and actions of ancestors, keeping these traditions alive.

Many contemporary Aboriginal artists continue to represent desert Dreaming stories, translating traditions once expressed through sand paintings onto canvas.
