SADDY RASHID AL SAFFAR

Saady Rashid Al Saffar was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1938 and was introduced to the art of calligraphy at the age of six. He studied at the Iraqi Institute for Arts and later received his BA in Arts from Baghdad University. He is also a member of the Iraqi Association of Artists.

Al Saffar’s early achievements included receiving the Medal of King Faisal Al Thani in 1958 and the Medal of Abdul Kareem Qasim in 1960. He later lived in Yemen, where he held a solo exhibition in Sana’a in 1969, an experience that would leave a lasting impression on his artistic practice.

The renowned Iraqi artist Jawad Salim, himself a celebrated calligrapher, was an important influence on Al Saffar. His paintings are characterised by strong colours and carefully selected imagery, reflecting an energetic and youthful approach to life.
