Scape explores the interconnected iconographies of the desert and the sea, bringing these contrasting landscapes into dialogue through photography, sculpture, and video. Desert images printed onto steel plates are suspended back-to-back with images of the sea on canvas, creating an environment that moves between space, vastness, memory, and imagination.

Mamakos’ works compress different timelines of memory and experience, exploring the possibilities of exile and purification. The desert and sea become more than physical landscapes; they act as psychological spaces through which ideas of displacement, transformation, and renewal can be considered.

Desert forms created from rust produced by seawater are burnished with acid and sand before being burned directly into the steel, resembling a daguerreotype exposed to the sun.
