SHADOWS

Shadows explores identity, self-perception, and the elusive relationship between the self and its reflection. Through the metaphor of the mirror and the shadow, Yasmin Sinai considers the difficulty of recovering or recognising an authentic sense of self.

In her artist’s statement, Sinai describes standing before a mirror and finding that her reflection has lost its colour, becoming a grey shadow of itself. She attempts to restore the image by imagining it in blue, red, pink, and green, yet the shadow remains unchanged.

She then turns to ornamentation, covering the shadow with gold in the hope of finding the lost image within it. The body becomes increasingly decorated—the breast adorned with gold, the heart still beating—yet the reflection remains distant and unrecognisable.
